Projects

This page just shows a selection of projects that are currently making use of NorNet. More project descriptions and further details are coming soon!

Multi-Path Transport

CMT-SCTP for Linux Kernel SCTP

The realisation of Concurrent Multipath Transfer for SCTP (CMT-SCTP) in the Linux kernel is a currently running master thesis project in cooperation with the Universitetet i Oslo (UiO). See also http://www.mn.uio.no/ifi/studier/masteroppgaver/nd/masteroppgave_netsys_linux-cmt-sctp.html. CMT-SCTP for Linux is going to be contributed into the standard Linux kernel soon, offering Linux users out-of-the-box multi-path transfer capabilities with SCTP!

Multi-Path TCP

Simula is cooperating with the Université catholique de Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium for research and development on Multi-Path TCP (MPTCP). Particularly, MPTCP is supported by NorNet Edge as well as NorNet Core.

See http://mptcp.info.ucl.ac.be/ for further details on MPTCP and related research!

Shared Bottleneck Detection

RTP Media Congestion Avoidance Techniques (RMCAT)

NorNet is used to evaluate shared bottleneck detection in support of Coupled Congestion Control for RMCAT. This is a cooperation between the Simula Research Laboratory and Universitetet i Oslo.

See http://heim.ifi.uio.no/~safiquli/coupled-cc/index.html for further details!

Multi-Path Transport

There is ongoing work in shared bottleneck detection for multi-path transport (particularly for Multi-Path TCP) as well.

Performance Evaluation of the Balia MPTCP Congestion Control Algorithm

The Balia (Balanced Linked Adaption) algorithm has been recently developed to provide improved throughput, responsiveness and fairness (towards single-path TCP). This project of Alcatal-Lucent’s Bell Labs and Caltech plans to take advantage of NorNet’s multi-homing capabilities to perform large-scale experiments to study the performance of Balia and compare it with other algorithms.
To learn more about Balia, please see the Internet-Draft: draft-walid-mptcp-congestion-control-00, presentation slides at the IETF-90 meeting: slides-90-mptcp-0.pdf, and full technical paper: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1308.3119v2.pdf.

Internet Measurements

ECN Deployment Survey

The University of Aberdeen, in collaboration with Simula, is performing a survey of explicit congestion notification (ECN) deployment in the Internet. This survey will look at web server support for ECN and also at any connection issues arising from the attempted use of ECN by clients.

Network Security

VoIP Misuse Detection

Voice-over-IP (VoIP) communication based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has evolved as de-facto standard for voice communication. However, the popularity and low cost of SIP system deployments in the Internet make it an interesting attack target. The VoIP misuse detection project of the University of Duisburg-Essen applies NorNet Core systems to analyse such attacks in the real Internet. To understand attack patterns and getting information on security weaknesses is important in order to take appropriate countermeasures against such attacks. NorNet therefore helps to make VoIP application in the Internet more secure!

Network Resilience

Evalg

The goal of the Evalg project is to improve network resilience for the purpose of electronic voting. Particularly, with the help of Simula and NorNet Edge, the 2013 elections went smoothly thanks to the successful failover handling with the developed system in Larvik (read the details here)! See http://nevada.simula.no for further information on the Evalg project.

Mobile Broadband Measurements

NorNet Edge is constantly monitoring the performance of Norway’s mobile broadband betworks. See http://robustenett.no/map for details on the measurements and results.

Seattle Open Peer-to-Peer Computing

Seattle makes the power of Cloud Computing available to everyone. It is free, community-driven, open source, and provides access to computers worldwide. Seattle operates on resources such as laptops, servers, and phones, which are donated by users and institutions. The global distribution of the Seattle network provides the ability to use it in application contexts that include cloud computing, peer-to-peer networking, ubiquitous/mobile computing, and distributed systems. Seattle is now running on some NorNet Core nodes as well!

See https://seattle.poly.edu for details on Seattle!

ZenTest

ZenTest will provide a unique platform for research and innovation in the Cyber Physical Systems (CPSs) testing domain, including computation, control, and communication — the three key components in a CPS. ZenTest will be closely related to and expand on the capabilities of several existing Norwegian infrastructures, including:

  1. NorNet (https://www.nntb.no) for emulating long-distance network scenarios commonly used in, e.g., remote surgery and telemedicine applications;
  2. Notur (https://www.notur.no) and
  3. NorStore (https://www.norstore.no) for the execution of test cases and the storage of test execution results, respectively.

ZenTest will be used to support several of our existing projects, such as:

Fling

When developing protocol extensions, it is often important to know what will happen to particular types of packets along a path (e.g. «If we add an option to this packet, is it more likely to be dropped? Will the option often be removed?»). fling allows for easy experimentation with various protocols of interest.

fling will become a flexible platform where users can upload customized tests to a server, describing a client-server dialogue of any type of packets, and observe what happens to them along a path. Permanently running fling clients then regularly download new test descriptions from the server and carry out the tests, such that a new result is automatically produced across the whole fling platform. By permanently running fling clients, NorNet Core forms the beginning of this platform, which is eventually meant to grow, also utilizing clients and servers running in other testbeds.
